Broceliande - Habits de Printemps pour Ponthus

Le hêtre de Ponthus est l'un des plus vieux et des plus merveilleux arbre de Broceliande.
La légende raconte les amours de Ponthus et de la belle Sydoine. Ponthus, fils du roi de Galice, est chassé de son pays par les Sarrasins. Le prince fuit par la mer et rejoint le port de Vannes. Il y est accueilli par le roi de Bretagne. A la cour du monarque, Ponthus rencontre Sydoine : ils se plaisent. Or les Sarrasins débarquent à Brest. Ils menacent la Bretagne. Une violente bataille s'engage. Ponthus fait preuve d'une grande bravoure : l'envahisseur est vaincu. En récompense, le prince est fait connétable et le roi lui accorde la main de Sydoine. Mais jaloux, le propre ami de Ponthus, Guennelet, trahit son maître. Il le calomnie : le prince est banni de la cour.
Où se réfugie-t-il ? Dans la forêt de Brocéliande bien sûr. Sept ans se passent. Guennelet, n'ayant pu obtenir les bonnes grâces de Sydoine, il décide d'en finir avec Ponthus. Le traître se rend en Brocéliande où il défie le valeureux chevalier. Un combat à mort s'engage. Pendant douze jours, les deux hommes s'affrontent dans un corps à corps monstrueux. Au soir du douzième jour, Ponthus tranche la tête d'un Guennelet épuisé. Rien ne s'oppose alors à son retour à la cour du roi de Bretagne où il épouse Sydoine en justes noces. Pour commémorer sa victoire, Ponthus fera planter un hêtre sur le lieu même du combat.
Ne le cherchez pas sur une carte, vous ne l'y trouverez pas, la vue de cet arbre ne s'offre qu'à quelques privilegiés qui l'ont croisé par hazard ...
The beech of Ponthus is one of the oldest and of the most magnificent tree of Broceliande.
The legend tells the courtship of Ponthus and beautiful Sydoine. Ponthus, son of king of Galicia, is hunted by his country by the Saracens. The prince avoids(flees) by the sea and joins the port of Vannes. He is welcomed by king of Brittany there.
In the court(yard) of the monarch, Ponthus meets Sydoine: they fall in love. Now the Saracens land in Brest. They threaten Brittany. A violent battle makes a commitment. Ponthus shows a big bravery: the invader is overcome. In reward, the prince is made supreme commander and king gives him the hand of Sydoine. But jealous person, the own friend of Ponthus, Guennelet, betrays his boss. He libels him : the prince is banished from the court(yard).
Where does he take refuge? In the forest of Broceliande naturally. Seven years take place. Guennelet, not having been able to obtain the good graces of Sydoine, it decides to finish it with Ponthus. The traitor goes(surrenders) in Broceliande where he challenges brave knight. A fight with death makes a commitment. During twelve days, both men are in confrontation in a monstrous hand-to-hand fight. In the evening of the twelfth day, Ponthus cuts the head of exhausted Guennelet.
Nothing opposes then to its return in the court(yard) of king of Brittany where he wife Sydoine in just wedding.
To commemorate its victory, Ponthus will make plant a beech on the place of the fight.
Do not look for him on a map, you will not find him there, the sight of this tree offers itself only to some privilegiés which crossed him by hazard...
